Hungary is a landlocked country in the Carpathian basin of central Europe, that borders to Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. It covers an area of 93.030 km² and has a population of approximately 10.034.000 inhabitants.
Its capital and largest city is Budapest. Other major cities are Debrecen and Pecs. This land was considered the cultural centre of the western world, as it used to be a powerful nation until the 1910´s, when it lost more than two thirds of its territory upon signing the Treaty of Trianon. The present form of government is a parliamentary Republic.
It has a Continental climate with hot summers with occasional rainfalls and cold snowy winters. The average temperature is 30º in the summer and between 0º and -15º in the winter.
Due to its geographical situation, Hungary is a land of thermal water. Its thermal water is of excellent quality and can be found all over the country. About 1500 thermal springs are spread over the country. The largest thermal lake in the world is located in Hungary, the Lake of Heviz.
Hungary is member of the OECD and the NATO. It joined the EU in May 2004. The official language spoken is Hungarian, though German is widely spoken.
This nation is regarded as one of the most prolific ones in the scientific field, as many outstanding scientists and engineers are of Hungarian origins. The Mathematics education in Hungary is one of the best in the world.
After closing its communist period, it started to develop a high income economy, turning into a market economy. Its economic growth evolves rapidly as it is one of the newest member countries of the EU. About a third of the foreign direct investment in central Europe goes to Hungary. The government spending is still high and this delays its suitability to join the Eurozone. Therefore, the official currency is the Forint.
Hungary´s economy is characterized by strong trade, fiscal, monetary, investment, business and labour freedoms, as well as low inflation rate. It has a current average yearly DGP per capita of 20.500 USD. The government controls an easy investment system by demanding licenses in security-sensitive areas.
Hungary holds the 76th position in the list of countries by immigrant population, published by the United Nations report World Population Policies 2005, with approximately 316.000 immigrants.
