Iceland is an island country located in the North Atlantic Ocean between mainland Europe and Greenland. It covers an area of 103.00 Km² and there live about 320.000 inhabitants. More than the 14% of the country´s territory is covered by lakes and glaciers. Being located between the Iceland hotspot and the Mid Atlantic Ridge, the island is quite active, with many volcanoes and geysers that attract scientists and geologists worldwide.
The climate of Iceland's coast is subpolar oceanic. The warm North Atlantic Current ensures generally higher annual temperatures than in most places of similar latitude in the world. Despite its proximity to the Arctic, the island's coasts remain ice-free through the winter.
Its capital and largest city is Reykjavík, with the 64% of Iceland´s population. Other significant cities are Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður. The official language is Icelandic, though English and Danish are widely spoken.
Today, Iceland has some of the world's highest levels of economic and civil freedoms. In 2007, Iceland was ranked as the most developed country in the world by the United Nations' Human Development Index and it is ranked as the most peaceful country in the world .
Iceland is a member of the UN, NATO, EFTA, EEA and OECD, but not of the European Union. Its official currency is the Icelandic Króna.
Iceland is the fourth most productive country in the world by nominal gross domestic product per capita (54,858 USD). It produces abundant hydro-electric and geothermal power, though it lacks natural resources; On the other hand its historical fishing industry still provides almost 40% of export earnings and employs 8% of the work force.
