Brief Introduction to Malta

Malta, an island nation, is a European microstate formed by an archipelago of 7 islands located in southern Europe, set between Tunisia, Sicily and Libya, bathed by the Mediterranean waters.

It is the fourth most densely populated country in the world, with more than 400.000 inhabitants living in an area of 316 km², distributed in 3 main islands and 4 islets. The main island is the archipelago of Malta and has 246 km². The capital city is La Valletta. Gozo and Comino are other well known islands.

Malta has as a Mediterranean climate, with rainy winters and hot dry summers. The average temperature from May to October is 25º.

It is a nation of ancient Greek origins, which has a rich culture thanks to the civilizations that have contributed to its development. After being a Roman settlement during centuries, it was a crusaders important enclave in the middle Ages. Afterwards, France, Italy and Greece influenced the islands until the British settled in the 19th century. The historical centre of La Valletta has been designated World heritage by the UNESCO.

Malta is an independent parliamentary Republic since 1979. Its official languages are Maltese and English, though Italian is also widely spoken. It joined the EU in 2004, and adopted the Euro has official currency in 2008. Malta is also part of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations.

Its economy prospered during the last World War, mainly due to its strategic location. After the opening of the Suez Channel, the shipping and trading sectors boosted the economy. Therefore, its economy depends mainly on foreign trade, followed by manufacture and Tourism. This last sector has increased its power in the last decades due to the flourishing film production sector that sees in those stunning landscapes perfect sceneries.

It has a yearly average GDP per capita of 23.908 Euros. Along its history, Malta has received a lot of immigrants. Initially those that went into exile followed by those seeking asylum during the wars. Today, Malta requests that all immigrants apply for a work permit once entering the islands.

Malta holds the 165th position in the list of countries by immigrant population, published by the United Nations report World Population Policies 2005, with approximately 11.000 immigrants.
