Portugal is situated in South Western Europe, and is part of the Iberian Peninsula. It borders to Spain and the Atlantic Ocean being the most western country of the European mainland. It covers an area of 92.345 Km² and it has nearly 11 million inhabitants. The capital city is Lisbon, and other major cities are Braga, Coimbra and Porto. Its official language is Portuguese.
Portugal has an Atlantic-Mediterranean climate, and a maritime climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, which is characterized for being cold and rainy in the north then hot and dry in the South. It is one of the warmest countries in European and the temperature varies from 13º to 18º.
Portugal has Exclusive Economic Zone, which is a sea zone over which they have special rights over the exploration and use of marine resources. It has 1.727.408 km², being the 3rd largest Exclusive Economic Zone of the European Union and the 11th largest in the world.
It is a democratic Republic since 1976. Being a developed country, it has a high Human Development Index. It is the 7th most peaceful and the 13th most globalized country in the world, and has the world's 19th highest quality of life. It is a member of the European Union since 1986 and of the United Nations since 1955. It is also a founding member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (Community of Portuguese Language Countries, CPLP), and the European Union's Eurozone, being thus one of the countries that adopted the Euro currency in 2002.
It has developed a very diverse economy which is increasingly supported by the sector of services since joining the EU. Portugal's economy is based on services and industry such as software and automotive. The industry of Tourism plays a very important role together with technology exports. The Algarve is one of the most sought after touristic destinations for the European travelers.
Portugal ranks the 44th position in the list of countries by immigrant population, published by the United Nations report World Population Policies 2005, with approximately 764.000 immigrants in the year 2008.
